Celtic v Renton 1890
Apr 14 2008, 2:31 PM EDT This game is a bit of a puzzle to me. It's down as a league game and The Scotsman refers to it as a 'Scottish League Match'. But there was no corresponding away fixture with Renton in season 1890-91. I've not seen it referre to as a league match in other Celtic record books. Can anyone shed any light? 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Celtic v Renton 1890
Apr 18 2008, 3:47 PM EDT My understanding is that St. Bernards were banned by the SFA for breaking the strictly amatuer code in Scotland by paying their players . They reformed under another name - Edinburgh Saints - and played Renton in a friendly. The SFA were outraged at Renton for playing a "professional" club so they were also banned from all football! The league had no option but to give them the boot and consequently the result of league match against Celtic was expunged. Renton made a legal challenge to the ban which was lifted in time for the next league season. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
