Celtic Tournaments - The Dubai Super Cup

The Dubai Cup was deemed an "unofficial British championship" played between the champions of England and Scotland in the United Arab Emirates.

During the mid 1980s the former fishing port of Dubai was still far from the luxurious millionaires resort and metropolis of spectacular sky scrappers and excessive consumerism that it now is. Indeed there were a few eyebrows raised at the prospect of two British clubs playing for a trophy in such unfamiliar surroundings.

However the ambitious UAE regime recognised that football was an excellent instrument to promote their relatively new nation to the western world. Whether they had the likes of Tony Shepherd and Pierce O’Leary in mind when devising their global marketing plan is another matter! But with English clubs in the early years of their post-Heysel European ban the Dubai Cup was something teams from south of the border were only too happy to embrace. .

So it was that on December 9th at the Al Wasl stadium Celtic took on English champions Liverpool in front of a 15,000 crowd for what was originally titled the Dubai Super Cup.

The first-half was a rather hum-drum affair, devoid of real talking points and even the Anglo-Scottish factor rivalry couldn’t raise excitement levels too high. Owen Archdeacon opened the scoring for the Bhoys early in the second half and a touch of drama was added to proceeding when Liverpool and Scotland defender Alan Hansen grabbed a late equaliser. The match went to penalties and it was the Anfield club that took the trophy winning 4-2 after the spot kicks thanks to misses from Owen Archdeacon (saved) and Mo Johnstone (hit the post).

Rangers took the cup on penalties the next year when they defeated Everton in a battle of the blues. But in April 1989 Liverpool and the Hoops returned once more to battle it out for what now was known as simply the Dubai Champions Cup. Not as super as they may have led you to believe.

Again the match went to penalties, this time after John Aldridge had equalised Mark McGhee’s opening strike for Celtic. Unlike 1986 though it was the Celtic players who kept their cool in the desert and they took the trophy 4-2 on penalties despite Mick McCarthy missing the opening kick. Peter Grant, Tommy Coyne, Andy Walker and Billy Stark were all successful from the spot for the Bhoys while Pat Bonner made a wonderful save from Steve McMahon before Steve Staunton hit the post.

That was to prove to be the last time the Dubai Cup was staged and as a consequence the simple but impressive trophy remains in the possession of the Bhoys.

Newly returned Bhoys boss Billy McNeill paid just £70,000 to bring Stark to Glasgow from Aberdeen where he had enjoyed much success since moving north from St Mirren in June 1983.

The former Buddie was however deemed to be past his best by the time he pulled on the Hoops but the capture of the veteran was to prove inspirational as Celtic went on to record a famous league and cup double in the club’s centenary season.

The wily and energetic Stark produced some wonderful displays that season and any doubts about his potential value to the team were demolished on August 29th when he scored the only goal to defeat Rangers at Parkhead.

Billy Stark eventually left Celtic in July 1990 to join Kilmarnock but he was to return to the club four years later as assistant to new manager Tommy Burns.

Billy Stark enjoyed instant hero status in his first Old Firm game for Celtic — but he also feels for under-pressure Paul Le Guen at Rangers

BILLY STARK knows the joy of scoring the winner in an Old Firm match, but his goal almost became a postscript as in the madcap Old Firm world he was hailed a hero by the Celtic support — as he was involved in the sending-off of Graeme Souness.

The beanpole midfielder was 30 when Billy McNeill, starting his second spell as Parkhead manager, snapped him up from Aberdeen. Stark made his Old Firm debut at Celtic Park in August 29, 1987, scoring the decisive goal after five minutes in a 1-0 victory. But it was a clash in the 54th minute with the Rangers player-manager that gave him a footnote in Old Firm history.

“I slid into a tackle which people who remember me as a player will find hard to believe,” recalls Stark. “My boot came off and I was still holding it when Peter Grant passed to me and Graeme Souness went to win the ball. I managed to see him coming and dodged his challenge. It was worth a booking, but referee Davie Syme wasn’t his pal. He’d had his name taken earlier for mouthing at the ref, so he was sent off.

“Graeme was a magnificent player, but he didn’t like getting beaten. In the heat of the moment you go for the ball, and if you mistime it then it looks bad and he was full value for that ordering-off. Some Celtic fans were more chuffed that Souness was sent off than the fact we won, which tells you everything about the rivalry.”

Stark, now in charge of Queen’s Park, has been named the Third Division manager of the month for November. He was No2 at Celtic under Tommy Burns and admits, as yet another confrontation looms against Rangers, that he retains a keen interest. “Everyone is force-fed the daily Old Firm diet and I still get a tingle when these games come round, even though I’m not involved now. That special edge would be there even if they played every week. “If you’re unlucky enough to be on the heavy end of a defeat, and I was in the Celtic side beaten 5-1 at Ibrox (in August 1988), you just go home and shut the door for a week. Well, apart from Frank McAvennie but he operated under different rules from the rest of us. Conversely, an Old Firm win is great for the winner’s confidence and Rangers will believe they still have a chance in the league if they win this one, which is why it is so important.”

Stark sees similarities in the reign of Burns as Celtic manager with Paul Le Guen at Rangers, and the Frenchman faces another searching test today in his first Old Firm game on home ground. “The new Rangers manager is just like Tommy, it’s a transitional time for his club and he’s had to build a new team. I know how intense it was for Tommy, he was up against arguably the best Rangers team ever, as they went for nine in a row. We operated at Hampden for one season with Celtic Park being rebuilt. He had as much on his shoulders as anyone could bear, and the problems are magnified a million times as an Old Firm manager but it makes you a better man.

“The job changes everyone who does it, at Celtic and Rangers. If you take all the criticism personally then you’re not able to function. Paul Le Guen is a proven manager, I’ve been impressed with the way he conducts himself. He’s an intelligent, measured individual and it doesn’t look as if he gets caught up in the madness. But I’m sure he’s still found it a culture shock becoming part of the Old Firm.”

Stark also admires the way Gordon Strachan, his former Aberdeen teammate, has recovered from the black start of that defeat by Artmedia Bratislava in the Champions League qualifier. “Nobody could have envisaged Celtic being where they are now in such a short space of time. It showed great strength of character on his part to overcome all the early criticism.”

"I was at home, resting before an evening derby with Hearts, when I got a call from Eddie Turnbull ," recalls Stanton. "Eddie had Jock with him, and he came on and said: 'Would you like to join my team?' I said yes, and travelled to Parkhead that night. I found out later that Celtic had tried to buy me a few times."

So Stanton signed on September 1 - with Jackie McNamara moving in the opposite direction - and was introduced to his new teammates wearing a classic Arthur Montford-style checked jacket ("It was so loud you needed volume control, but I was proud of it").

Generally a midfielder at Hibs, Stein told him to play sweeper, and three days later he made his debut against Rangers at Parkhead. "All I could think was: 'Please don't make a mistake', but the game ended 2-2 and it was a great experience."

The rest of that season would prove to be an Indian summer for Stanton, Celtic winning the championship and the Scottish Cup.


Career Overview

He was named Player of the Year in 1970, the season Celtic made it to a second European Cup final. Played briefly under Stein at Easter Road, captained the club for six years and scored in the 2-1 League Cup final victory over Celtic in 1972. Hibs, though, often ended up second-best to the Glasgow side in major finals. Was injured in the opening game of his second season at Celtic, against Dundee United, and was forced to retire.

He scored on his debut on December 4th in a 4-0 league victory over Third Lanark at Celtic Park but for much of the early part of his career Avondale-born Somers was loaned out to other clubs – most noteably Blackburn.

When he returned from his successful spell in England the inside-left began to become established as a key component of the Celtic side.

This most clever of players was deemed to be the brains of one of the most successful sides in Scottish football history. With Somers pulling the strings of the Celtic attack the Bhoys won six league titles in a row and also claimed the Scottish Cup 1904, 1907 and 1908.

He was immensely popular among the support and was almost as renowned for his sharp tongue as his sharp passing.
He would famously employ his razor edged wit to torment opponents. Rangers’ Jiimmy Gait was renowned for his ability as a golfer and with Somers enjoying the better of their clash the Celtic man told his rival: "You teach me how to play golf Jimmy and I’ll teach you how to play football."

After scoring 62 goals in 219 appearances for Celtic the great Somers returned to Hamilton in January 1910 and was to retire from the game a year later. Tragically he was to die in 1914 at the age of just 36 after having to have part of his leg amputated.

Signed from Maryhill Hibs Solis was a diminutive and hard working player but one who was behind Charles Napier in the first team pecking order. He made a total of nine appearances for Celtic before departing in February 1932 for Coleraine.

The Baillieston-born player was renowned for his excellent distribution and he made his debut in a Scottish Cup tie against Dundee at Parkhead and set up two goals in a 7-1 victory.

A regular in the side in the 1979-80 season he picked up a Scottish Cup winners medal after being part of the team that defeated Rangers 1-0 at Hampden. He won a Championship winners medal the following season but was sold to Hibernian half-way through the campaign for £60,000 after losing his starting place to Mark Reid.

His move to the then First Division club allowed Sneddon to pick up two championship medals in the one season as he helped the Edinburgh side claim top spot in their division. Sneddon proved to be a great buy for Hibs and was to be an Easter Road stalwart for 11 years. As a Celt he played 98 games and scored one goal.

His debut came in a 3-0 Scottish War Cup defeat at Raith Rovers on March 2nd. He made a total of 15 appearances before joining Arthurlie in the summer of 1940.

A quick and direct winger, the gangly Smith had caught the eye of Celtic boss Davie Hay playing for The Spiders in a Scottish Cup tie at Parkhead in February 1986. Following his arrival at Parkhead in the summer Smith made his competitive debut in a 2-0 League Cup home win over Airdrie on August 20th 1986.

After a promising enough start to his Celtic career Smith was hampered by injury from September onwards and when Billy McNeill arrived as new manager in the summer of 1987 the winger was told he had no future at Celtic. So after just one full season and eight appearances Smith departed for Dunfermline in October 1987.

A highly-rated junior player he made his debut in October the following year in a home league clash with Queen of the South which ended 1-1.

Eric was an all action style of player who could slot into virtually any position across the park and in his time at Parkhead he played at half-back, inside-forward and on the wings. He relished the physical aspect of the game and loved to get stuck in. His combination of courage and skill allowed him to take games by the scruff of the neck and he was a hugely popular figure with the Celtic support.

By season 1957-58 he was an established first team regular and was called up by Scotland for a summer tour in 1959.
In May 1960 he was tempted south to Leeds by Don Revie after making 130 appearances for Celtic and scoring 20 goals.

He later became manager of Morton and Hamilton before going on to coach in Cyprus and the Middle East. He died in Dubai in 1991 after suffering a heart attack.

Fast, direct and with an eye for goal the youngster certainly impressed in his early appearances for the Hoops as he netted twice in his first two outings for the Bhoys first team.

The Celtic youth team graduate didn’t look out of place among the big money signings brought in by O’Neill and the Bhoys support enjoyed the teenager’s traditional wing play. Despite such a promising start though Smith could not establish himself as a regular starter and with most appearances limited to cameos from the substitute bench he struggled to maintain his form.

He was however capped by Scotland boss Berti Vogts in 2003, although by then it was looking increasingly likely that the wideman would have to look elsewhere for regular first team football.

In the summer of 2004 he was released by Celtic after 56 appearances – mostly from the bench. He signed a one year deal with Dutch club Den Haag before moving on to Aberdeen where, despite injuries, his form saw him once more in the Scotland reckoning.

Hughie made his competitive debut for the Hoops in a 6-0 trouncing of Hibs in the league at Parkhead on August 23rd .He made an instant impact on the Parkhead support with a debut goal.

A typically tricky wee Scottish forward, Smith loved to dribble the ball and try fancy flicks. He was also deceptively quick and was an accurate passer of the ball.

His main failing though was a lack of strength and in the robust world of Scottish football in the 1930 Hughie was too easily knocked off the ball.

Hughie was released by Celtic in June 1934 after 27 appearances and two goals. He went on to play for Ayr United and Morton amongst others.

He made a surprise debut as a 17-year-old at Falkirk on September 19th as manager Liam Brady attempted to resolve a defensive crisis as the Bhoys went down 4-3.

Reserve team skipper for much of his time at Parkhead Smith was comfortable both at centre-half and in the right back role. He showed glimpses of real promise during his first team outings but never really developed enough to become a first team regular. He departed Parkhead for Dundee in 1995 after 20 first team appearances..

The outside-right played his only competitive match for the Bhoys in a 2-0 league defeat at St Mirren on March 13th.

With Celtic on the verge of becoming a Limited Company who were planning to buy in new talent for the team Slaven was deemed surplus to requirements and departed for Motherwell on June 5 1897.

"The second Celtic player who lost his life on the Somme [along with Leigh Roose] was Sergeant Patrick Slavin whose playing career included spells at Fauldhouse Hibs, Heatherbell, Celtic, Broxburn and West Calder Swifts. Seargent Slavin was with the 2nd Bn Royal Scots and died on Monday 13th November 1916. Patrick lies buried in Serre Rd No 2 Cemetery in the same cemetery as my Great Great Uncle Harold Bates, which is the largest cemetery on the Somme, containing 7,126 graves. Patrick's Regiment was involved in one of the most significant Battles of the Somme campaign - the 2nd Battle for the village of Serre. On the fateful day of Patrick's death, fog was thick as zero hour approached at 5am which signified the start of the 2nd ill-fated attack on Serre. The Regimental diary states that they were not as prepared as they might have been for the unexpected weather conditions, suggesting that tapes should have been laid in advance to guide Patrick's comrades to where the gaps were in the German barbed wire. One cannot begin to imagine what it must have been like for Patrick and his comrades waiting to go over the top at 5am into 'insufficient light' plus thick fog with no tapes to guide them to where the enemy was. If that was not bad enough the diary also informs us that not only had the German wire not been properly cut to the extent reported, but also the enemy lay in wait in 'greater numbers than expected'. One suspects that even if Black Adder's batman Baldrick had been in charge that day, his cunning plan would not have involved this suicide mission which resulted in 23 soldiers including Patrick being killed, 84 missing presumed dead and 177 wounded."

The big defender made all his appearances for the Bhoys in the miserable league campaign of 1994/95 with his debut coming in the 1-1 draw at home to Dundee United on January 7th 1995.

Jim moved on to Partick Thistle in March 1996 but after a steady start with the Jags his continued battle with a weight problem saw him out of the first team picture at Firhill and he joined Ross County on a free in January 1998.
