Celtic were presented with the trophy above to commemorate their participation in the Viareggio Trophy in the summer of 1988.

The prestigious close-season event also attracted newly crowned European Cup winners Porto, European Cup Winners Cup holders Mechelen and Dutch giants Ajax (who Mechelen had defeated in the ECWC final). Celtic, who had just completed a domestic league and Scottish Cup double, lost their semi-final clash to Porto after conceding a late goal to the Portugese side.
