Tobin, John

Goalkeeper John Tobin must boast one of the strangest Celtic careers with his one appearance coming in a game that never was!

The former Hibs keeper was drafted in by the recently formed Bhoys for the Scottish Cup tie with Clyde at the original Parkhead ground on November 24th 1888. Celtic lost the match 1-0 but the game was then declared void after the Bhoys complained that it was finished in darkness due to a late kick-off caused by the Clyde players having to remove illegal footwear.

Bathgate-born Tobin – who had played for Hibs in both their 1887 Scottish Cup triumph and in the opening of Celtic Park - later became a scout for English clubs.
