Celtic Tournaments - Polar Bear Trophy

The Polar Bear Trophy was presented to Celtic F.C by Valur of Iceland to mark the meeting of the two clubs in the opening round of the 1975/76 Cup Winners Cup. The trophy carved from stone is a model of a polar bear eating a seal. The teams met in Reykjavík on 16 September 1975. Goals from Wilson and MacDonald gave Celtic a two goal lead to take back to Celtic Park. They progressed to the next round with a 7-0 victory in Glasgow two weeks later win giving them an aggregate score of 9-0. The goals were scored by Edvaldsson, Dalglish, P. McCluskey, Deans, Callaghan and a double from Harry Hood. The brother of Celtic's 'Shuggie' Edvaldsson who scored in the second leg and missed a twice taken penalty in Reykjavik was also playing but in the colours of Valur.The Bhoys' Polar Bear Trophy triumph came in the 1975 Cup Winners' Cup first-round win over Iceland's FC Valur, who marked their 9-0 aggregate defeat by giving Celtic a stone-carved trophy in the shape of a polar bear devouring a seal.
