McStay, William (1982-87)

[Player Pics]

The elder brother of Paul and part of the famous McStay family Celtic dynasty Willie was a Celtic ‘S’ Form signing in December 1977.

A ball playing defender McStay made his debut as a substitute in a 3-0 home league win over Motherwell on April 2nd 1983. Without coming close to the immense passing ability of his younger brother, Willie was himself a clever user of a ball and his distribution from the back was good.

He scored a long range effort in a 3-0 defeat of Rangers exactly a year after his debut and he won a Scottish Cup winners medal in 1985 and League Championship gong in 1986. For the most part though Willie was not a regular starter but more an able deputy to the likes of McGrain, McAdam and Aitken

During four seasons in the first team picture McStay made 90 appearances and netted twice. He left Celtic for Huddersfiled Town in March 1987 and in 1992 went to manage Sligo Rovers in Ireland where he enjoyed a hugely successful reign before returning to Parkhead in a coaching capacity.

Having had massive success at youth level Willie is now in charge of Celtic’s reserve team.
