Midfielder Pat McGinlay came to Celtic in July 1993 from Hibs for a fee which would eventually be set by tribunal at £525.000.

Partick-born McGinlay’s move to Parkhead was a dream come true for the player who had earned a reputation at Easter Road as a midfielder who loved to get forward and score goals.

His good form with the Edinburgh side had seen him linked in the press to moves south of the border with Tottenham supposedly keen on taking him to London before Celtic stepped in However his transfer was more costly than the cash-strapped Celtic board had hoped – they had bid only £245,000 - and his purchase had to be funded by the sale of out of favour Joe Miller, Steve Fulton and Stuart Slater.

Pat made his competitive Hoops debut as a sub in a 2-2 league draw at Motherwell on August 7th. McGinlay’s form with Hibs was not evident in his early Celtic appearances and despite some excellent performances against Rangers he looked like a player stuggling to settle into his new surroundings while manager Lou Macari appeared to be unsure of exactly where he wanted Pat to play.

It says much about how poor Celtic were during this period that despite never really convincing McGinlay was one of Celtic’s main goal threats.

However come the new season it was clear Pat did not fit into the first-team plans of recently appointed Bhoys manager Tommy Burns who splashed out to bring in Phil O’Donnell from Motherwell. McGinlay was viewed as surplus to requirements and in November 1994 he returned to Hibernian for £420,000.
