McGhee, Mark
Glasgow-born striker Mark McGhee arrived at Celtic in November 1985 from German giants Hamburg.
The experienced McGhee had made a name for himself with the talented Aberdeen side of the early 80s where he won the 1983 European Cup-Winners Cup and European Super Cup.
McGhee’s spell in Germany hadn’t been a huge success but Bhoys boss Davie Hay hoped the striker’s experience would prove to be a valuable addition to his squad. He endured a nightmare debut though when Celtic crashed 3-0 at Ibrox in a league clash on 9/11/85. In truth for much of his time at Parkhead McGhee was used as a back-up striker behind Brian McClair, Mo Johnstone and then Frank McAvennie and Andy Walker.
Described as a 'tough tank' McGhee, who previously had also played for Morton and Newcastle United, was a robust, old-fashioned centre-forward prepared in get involved in the tougher aspects of the game. His willingness to do just that hadn't always endeared him to the Celtic support while at Aberdeen. Consequently some in the Hoops support took time to welcome the player despite him being a boyhood Celtic fan.
McGhee did make some telling contributions to the Hoops, most noteably under the guidance of Billy McNeill in the double winning Centenary season of 1987/88 when he scored a late equaliser and set up a last gasp winner in the cup semi-final with Hearts.
