A hardworking and selfless striker Frank McGarvey signed for the Bhoys in March 1980 from Liverpool and he made his debut on the 12th of that month at his former club St Mirren in a 2-2 league draw.
McGarvey had been at Anfield for less than a year but after failing to settle in England he took a pay cut to end his Mersey misery and join his first love back in his native Glasgow for a then club record £250,000..
A lean and wirey figure Frank was a skilful but unorthodox striker whose unpredicatability was a nightmare for opposition defenders and keepers. He would shoot from any angle but he was not a selfish player as the likes of Charlie Nicholas would testify. His tireless running made him a nightmare to mark but a pleasure to play alongside. He had speed to match his stamina and was good in the air and on the deck.
McGarvey's most memorable moment as a Celt was in what proved to be his last appearance for the Hoops. With just 5 minutes to go in the 1985 Scottish Cup final at Hampden Celtic were chasing a winner after coming from a goal down to tie 1-1. Roy Aitken swung in a great cross and somehow McGarvey swooped to head home a famous winner.
The next week Frank rejected the club's new contract offer and he was transferred to St Mirren for £75,000. By then he had played 245 times for the Bhoys and scored 113 goals. As a Celt he won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup.
