Signed from Parkhead Juniors in September 1922 keeper John Hughes made his debut in a 1-0 home league win over Motherwell on October 14th.
Hughes was primarily a deputy to the great Charlie Shaw but he did oust the regular No 1 from the team for the Rangers game on October 28th 1922 – Celtic lost 3-1.
Hughes played a total of five competitive games for Celtic in three seasons at Parkhead during which time he spent several spells on loan at various teams. He was eventually released in 1925 and would join Alloa in September that year.
