George Gillan was a talented inside-left who played a season with Celtic while on loan from Alloa during the war years of the early 1940s.

Gillan – signed in August 1940 - scored on an impressive debut for the Bhoys as Celtic drew 2-2 with Hamilton Academical in the Regional League at Parkhead on August 10th.

A constant menace to the opposition defence Gillan was a nippy and shrewd performer capable of both creating and scoring goals. During his year with the Hoops he made 30 appearances and netted 10 times. Celtic were keen to make his move a permanent one but while the Parkhead board deliberated about this prospect Motherwell stumped up the cash and took Gillan to Fir Park where he continued to impress.
