An early Celtic hero Pat Gilhooly was a talented crowd pleasing forward who joined the Bhoys in October 1896.

After previously playing with Larkhall Thistle and Cambuslang Hibernian, Gilhooly made his Celtic debut on October 28th when he scored in a 1-1 home league draw with Hibernian.

He was a popular figure with the support who lapped up his mazy dribbles and goals but like many naturally gifted players some critics thought he lacked the discipline to get the most out of his talent.

He was sold to Sheffield United in September 1901 after a dip in form which was said to have been a result of the player’s poor attitude and unwillingness to work on his game.

Although not the quickest of players Gilhooly was undoubtedly an excellent forward and in his time at Parkhead he scored 20 goals in 50 appearances.
