Few tales are as intriguing as that of Celtic and their managers. The club was the epitome of managerial stability during its first century. Only six men had been Celtic manager by the time of the club's centenary in 1988. Each of them - Willie Maley, Jimmy McStay, Jimmy McGrory, Jock Stein, David Hay and Billy McNeill - had been Celtic players who then went on to become team manager. Once McNeill departed in 1991 Celtic shook off their conservative, stable image. The club appointed seven managers in nine years, including continentals such as Wim Jansen and Doctor Jozef Venglos. The name of the book is self-explanatory, and is simply a nostalgic look back at many different players from the club's history. What does though separate this from many others is that whilst others concentrate on the obvious few (Larsson, McGrory, Jinky etc), this book not only covers them but actually covers a multitude of other players from practically the first days of the club including many that most of us have likely never even heard about before hand. It is also more of a fan's eyeview, and gives a viewpoint from the ground where interspersed in the narratives are some short tales about each of the "cult heroes" that many of us might never have heard about before. What on the surface may at first look like a run-of-the-mill churned out tome is actually a quality gem, and a worthwhile buy for any interested Celtic fan.
