Versatile, left-sided attacking midfielder/forward who joined as a 16 year old in 2005.

Had been attached to Shelbourne while at school and was an Irish age group international. Came across with Paul Cahillane and Tim Kiely, who have since returned to Ireland: Cahillane becoming a GAA star and Kiely joining Cork City.

Carey stuck at it and moved up the ranks to the fringes of the reserve team, impressing with his play on either wing. But with Conroy a fixture on the reserves' left flank and older "projects" like Mizuno and McCourt also needing a game, Carey decided to get out on loan in order to get some playing time.

Linked up with his Shelbourne mentor Pat Fenlon at Bohemians in February 2009. Helped 'the gypsies' win the League but failed to extend his loan in order to play in July's Champions League qualifiers against Red Bull Salzburg.

Returned to Celtic to try and catch Mowbray's eye but appeared to be left in limbo with the SPL reserve league disbanded. Made a first team debut in the Europa League dead rubber against Rapid Vienna on 17 December 2009.

Moved to SPL bottom feeders St. Mirren on loan on 1 February 2010.
