Experimental Celts lose out in Warsaw
[Scotsman]An experimental Hoops line-up, featuring Stephen McManus alongside Gary Caldwell in central defence, and Alan Thompson just in front of the back four, were beaten by a Michal Gottwald strike in the 49th minute. Close-season signing Kenny Miller made his Celtic debut, as did Jiri Jarosik, but it was Aiden McGeady and Nicky Riley who came closest to scoring. McGeady had a first-half goal disallowed for offside, and Riley forced a fine save from Jan Mucha from a header. Stilian Petrov, who continues to seek a move away from Parkhead, also saw an effort well stopped, before David Marshall saved a Roger Guerreiro penalty, which had been given away by Thompson's mistimed tackle.
Legia Warsaw: Mucha (Fabianski 46); Bronowicki (Chalas 75), Szala, Alcantara (Jedrzejcyk 69), Kielbowicz (Djokovic 42); Guerreiro (Karzym 62), Burkhardt (Vukovic 46), Surma, Radovic (Szalachowski 46); Wlodarczyk (Gottwald 46), Brandao. Celtic: Marshall (Boruc 60, McGovern 71); Telfer (Wilson 46), Caldwell, McManus, Wallace (Camara 46); Petrov (Ferry 67), Thompson (Lawson 46), Jarosik (Pearson 46); Riley (Beattie 46), Miller (Virgo 69), McGeady. Subs not used: Mulgrew, O'Dea
