Rangers made the perfect start with a goal after just one minute, when Lovenkrands took advantage of a misjudged header from Tom Boyd to send a shot over Robert Douglas via a deflection off Mjallby.
Lovenkrands could have had a second goal after 15 minutes, but with just Douglas to beat he screwed effort just wide of the target.
Moravcik went close for Celtic with a free kick which flew narrowly over the bar after Lorenzo Amoruso was punished for handball 20 yards from goal.
The Slovak was involved in Celtic's 43rd minute equaliser when he headed a deep cross into the path of Hartson. The Welsh striker's shot on the turn was foiled but the ball fell into the path of Thompson and the former Aston Villa man calmly slotted it home from close range.
Henrik Larsson almost embarrassed Stefan Klos from a free kick early in the second half but the German keeper, who had set off the wrong way before the strike, recovered in time to make an awkward save.
Moravcik again went close when he surprisingly rose above towering Tore Andre Flo to head over the bar.
With 20 minutes remaining Moravcik left the field to rapturous applause from the Celtic fans.
The Rangers keeper made another stunning stop with four minutes remaining to stop Hartson's powerful close range header. All hell broke loose as Klos gathered the ball under great pressure and a huge brawl developed which saw Harton, Mjallby and Ricksen all receive red cards.
With tempers still simmering, referee Kenny Clark blew the final whistle right on 90 minutes.

Celtic's 100% home record for the season was broken as Rangers held on for a draw.
