1992-11-03: Celtic 1-2 Borussia Dortmund, Uefa Cup |

Version 4 - view current page

Quick Review

Celtic had done well to beat Cologne in the first round and were unlucky to draw another German team in the second.

The first leg was a 1-0 defeat in Germany but hopes were high that Celtic could progress again as they had recovered from a 2-0 deficit in the previous round.

Unfortunately, they were to discover that this German team were of a considerably higher quality than the one they had beaten in the first round. Dortmund eventually progressed to the final that year beating Real Zaragoza, Roma and Auxerre on the way. In the final they were beaten 3-1 in their own stadium by Juventus.

Nevertheless, the game started brightly for Celtic and Gerry Creaney scored, as he had done in the home match against Cologne.

Tom Boyd and John Collins were linking up well on Celtic's left and this was clearly giving the Germans problems throughout the first half.

At halftime Dortmund made a tactical switch - moving another man over to the left - and the threat from Collins and Boyd was switched off. With the the threat cancelled and Celtic unable to find inspiration from anywhere else on the pitch, the excellent Dortmund side scored 2 goals (Stephane Chapuisat and Michael Zorc) and never looked under serious pressure for the rest of the game.
