Celtic 2 0 Vojvodina

(from Geoffrey Green, The Times)

McNeill, with the last seconds dying, headed Celtic into the semi-final round of the European Cup at Parkhead last night. One down from Yugoslavia, the Scots hammered their hearts out all through a tense, intoxicated, bouyant second half . . .
With not a goal in sight at the interval, and still behind on aggregate from Novi Sad, this Scottish crowd was burning with impatience.

Yet Celtic themselves, for all their perpetual attack, allowed calmness to reign . . .

With half an hour to go Chalmers turned home a cross from the left from Gemmell. From that moment on, the last half-hour produced unbroken heartburn as Celtic thundered forward for the decider.

In that space Johnstone, who all through had been a thorn in the side of the Slav left flank, grew to even greater stature; and on the left wing Hughes at last began to use his and weight to add a second dangerous sector.

The Vojvodina defence suddenly found itself like a nut between the crackers.

As the minutes unwound there came great saves from by the Slav goalkeeper, Pantelic, from Gallagher, Hughes, Johnstone, Hughes again, and even Gemmell and Chalmers.

All were looking at their watches as Johnstone clearly was taking the last corner kick of the night. Over it came; up went a forest of heads, but there, the tallest of them, the fair head of McNeill, who nodded the ball home to the top corner.

That was victory at the last breath, and Parkhead and Parkhead and its great swirling, surging concourse took wings.
