1966-01-29: Heart of Midlothian 3-2 Celtic, League Division 1
We were forced to play Hearts in a League game at Tynecastle on Saturday 29th January 1966 (we lost 3-2) after arriving back from Tbilisi, Georgia, where we'd drawn 1-1 with Dynamo Kiev in the ECWC Quarter Final 2nd leg, on Wednesday 26th to go through to the semi 4-1 on aggregate. The game was played in Georgia because Kiev was snowbound in the Ukranian winter. After a tortuous journey back via Sweden, we arrived in Glasgow late on the Friday night, and I think the players were taken straight to Celtic Park at midnight for a loosening up training session. I'm sure part of the reason we were so late back was because the Aer Lingus charter flight had had 2 aborted take-off attempts in Sweden because of the snow, and Bob Kelly, mindful of Man Utd in Munich, vetoed a third attempt. Despite appeals for a postponement, the big-hearted Scottish League / SFA insisted we play Hearts as scheduled on the Saturday. It was one of 3 consecutive away defeats in the league (the others were 1-3 v Aberdeen and 0-1 v Stirling Albion) that could have easily cost us the 1965-66 tiotle, the first of the 9.
