1893-12-23 Dumbarton 4-5 Celtic
The Scotsman - Monday, 25th December 1893, page 5
CELTIC V DUMBARTON – At Dumbarton. Bell kicked off, and led an attack: but Doyle relieved, and a nice pass by Cassidy went for nothing, as nobody was up to meet the ball. Taylor took up the goal-kick, and had a rousing run, which finished with a capital shot. Cullen saved just before being grassed, and immediately repeated some fine saving. M’Millan defeated an attempt on the opposite goal, and a free kick was well taken by Miller, but the ball passed through untouched. Cassidy scored for the Celts from a corner; but ere many minutes had gone Johnston equalised after Cullen had put in some marvellous (sic) saving. M’Mahon notched a second point for the Irishmen with a fine angular shot; and at half-time the scores were :- Celtic, two; Dumbarton, one. The second half was most exciting. Blessington gave the Celts a further lead; but Johnston replied with one for Dumbarton, and the same player two minutes later equalised with a magnificent effort. M’Mahon again scored for the Celts, and Bell smartly replied with an equally clever point. Only a few minutes remained to go, and M’Mahon single-handed pulled the game off. Result :-Celtic, five; Dumbarton, four.
