The Scotsman - Monday, 25th September 1893, page 5

The Athletes were pressing down, but a quick run up by the homesteaders gave Madden the first chance, which was frustrated, The pressure on the home goal was smart, sometimes severe. Then play got to the other end, where M’Mahon had two grand tries. Bruce got clear away to the right, and fairly beat Cullen. Ten minutes from the interval a combined run by the home front resulted in Cassidy equalising. Leith resumed in spirited fashion, but the found the Celtic defence improved. At interval a draw. On resuming, the Celts gained a corner, from which M’Mahon almost headed. Another corner followed in quick succession, and yet another, but they were scrambled past. Getting away from the last, Leith made an incursion in Cullen’s direction. They were driven back, but managed to keep the play a little more open. McCartney made a blunder which let in Campbell. The Celts put in a stiff bit of passing, and finally took the lead by means of Cassidy. Leith replied with a spirited attack, but the finishing shot was high. Ten minutes to time Anderson was hurt, and so serious were his injuries that he had to be carried off. With only nine men Leith had the next attempt, but Cassidy, five minutes from time, got through a third. Madden put on a fourth. Final result :- Celtic, four goals; Leith Athletic, one goal.
