1892-04-02 Vale of Leven 2-2 Celtic
The Scotsman - Monday, 4th April 1892, page 10
Vale of Leven v Celtic.- This Scottish League match was played on Saturday at Alexandria. Campbell of the Vale kicked off, but Celts were at once round the goal, and for a minute or two its downfall seemed imminent. The Vale gradually worked up, but M’Lauchlan stopped their progress, and a good run by M’Callum and a weak effort by the Vale goalkeeper enabled the Celtic to put on the first goal. From the kick-off the Vale played up well, and Logan sent the ball past Cullen, thus equalising. The Vale quite held their own, and from a grand shot by Fleming they got into the lead. The Vale were playing a surprising game, and half-time found the score – Vale, two goals; Celtic, one goal. The Celtic were at once round the Vale goal, but their shooting even at close range was very bad. Continuing to press, the Vale goal had a very narrow escape, M’Lintock saving twice very cleverly. The Vale gradually worked the ball down the field, but the Celts’ backs were too strong for them, and repulsed them before they got dangerous. M’Callum on the Celts right wing got possession of the ball, and dashed to the wing. Busby failed to stop him, and he ran the ball through the goal thus equalising. The Vale continued to play up stubbornly, and time after time stopped promising runs, the goalkeeper in particular showing up brilliantly. Result :- A draw – two goals each.
