Celtic Games 1891 - Vale of Leven

The Scotsman - Monday, 26th January 1891, page 5

Vale of Leven v Celtic —At Alexandria. The Vale put themselves into order during the week, and the result of their preparation was apparent throughout the game. The Celtic, unfortunately, wanted the services of McKeown, and the rearrangement of the back division could not but weaken them. The Vale had also some changes in their team. At the start the Vale pressed, but experienced hard lines at goal. Matters proved worse, still when the Celtic men broke off, and did not stop till they had scored. - Nothing daunted, the Vale resumed the aggressive. Still, the game was even and conspicuous for good all round play. When fifteen minutes had gone, the Vale equalised, and by half-time were standing two goals to one, their points being taken by Bruce and Graham. The pace was forced in the second half by the Celts who fought hard and well to equalise. Their most determined attack was fifteen minutes from the close, when Wilson's goal-keeping alone saved the Vale. In the last minutes of the game, Cowan, who, had played a fine game throughout; scored with a low, swift shot; The Vale thus won a splendid game by three goals to one.
