1890-10-25 Abercorn 1-5 Celtic
Celtic Games 1890 - Abercorn
Abercorn v Celtic – One of the largest "gates" ever experienced in Paisley assembled at Underwood Park, Paisley, to witness the League match between the above teams. The match opened with retaliatory runs, and the goal-keepers on both sides showed themselves in splendid form. The Abercorn gradually asserted themselves, and Raeside managed to score the first goal for the home team. The visitors lost no time in assuming the aggressive, and the leather having been carried by clever passing to the Abercorn goal, Dowds equalised. The Celts again returned to the attack and Dowds added a second point. The Celts were playing with great dash, the forwards showing themselves in fine dribbling form. Madden and Dunbar carried the leather between them down the field, and passing over to Gallacher, he shot into the goal and a point was claimed. The referee allowed it, but the public and the home team protested against it. Some delay was occasioned on account of this, and on restarting the Abercorn made strenuous efforts to improve their position, but up to half time there was no change in the scores. After changing end the Celtic at once began to press their opponents, and Dowds again rushing to the front put on the fourth goal for his team. Shortly before the finish of the game Dowds scored the fifth goal, and the Abercorn were unable to increase their score. Result :— Celtic, 5 goals ; Abercorn, 1.
Celtic—Goal, Bell; backs Reynolds and M'Keowni; half-backs, M'Laren, Kelly, and Gallacher; forwards, CampbeII, Crossan, Dowds, Dunbar.
