1889-11-16 Celtic 7-1 Hibs
Celtic Games 1889 - Hibs
Celtic v Hibernians – The interest which centred in this match attracted a big crowd to Celtic Park. Losing the toss the Hibernians came away grandly, but M’Keown spoiled Quigley, and Groves made tracks for the opposite end. Coyle relieved, and again the Hibs bore down, and a grand effort culminated in the ball being shot past M’Laughlan. The Hibs during the first ten minutes of the game played a much superior game than their opponents. Steadying the furious onslaught of the Hibs, The Celts resumed their usual tactics. Dunbar tries a long shot, but the ball went wide. From the kick off from goal, Kelly sent in a long high shot into goal. Brogan was unsuccessful in clearing, and Dunbar was down on him ere he could recover, and the game was thus equal. Coleman put the ball passed Brogan for the second time to the delight of their supporters. M’Ghee and Flannigan changed the venue of operations, but the backs were equal to the onslaught, and soon Coleman headed past Brogan for the third time. Though in a minority the Hibs did not lose heart. At half-time the Celtis led by 3 goals to 1. On resuming, shots from Kelly, Coleman and Groves were averted, and M’Mahon just missed the bar at the other end by inches. The Celtic now played with the visitors, their passing, trickery, and effectiveness being simply superb. Ten minutes from time play was stopped owing to darkness, the Celtic leading by seven goals to one.
