Celtic Games 1888 - Clyde
Clyde v Celtic – The Clyde’s ground was formally opened for the season on Saturday by the Celtic, and as on .indication of the interest taken in the game close on – 10,000 spectators lined the ropes. The visitors were strongly represented, but the home eleven were minus Cherrie and Collins, their places being filled by Sawers and M'Farlane. The weather was all that could be desired, while the ground was never seen to better advantage. Fifteen minutes late Cochrane but the ball in motion, and Britton taking up the running, Dunning; was at once visited. Kelly relieved, and Coleman missed an easy chance of scoring after a splendid combined run by all the forwards. Aided by a foul, the home eleven again made strenuous efforts to score, but M'Laren averted disaster, and M'Callum, after treating the spectators to one of his dashing runs, wound up by beating Chalmers. Encouraged by their success, the Celts soon found another opening, Maley scoring three minutes later. The Clyde forwards at this point of the game were playing in rather loose style. Britton and Cochrane, after a dodgy piece of work, managed to gain a corner, which, although well placed, went for nothing. Coleman and M'Cllum again raised the seige, and Maley, with the goal at his mercy, fouled the ball Half-time arrived without further scoring. The ground team had to play short-handed in the second half. M'Lure having been injured. Despite this drawback they made matters warm for their opponents. Young, being too eager to score, lost a golden opportunity. Gradually the Celts compelled them to act on the defensive. Maley again scored, but the point was disallowed on the plea of offside. Imediately after Groves cleverly eluded all opposition and scored. M'Callum repeating the operation out of a scrimmage shortly after. Responding gamely, the Clyde tried hard to break through the defence of their opponents, and a mistake on the part of the backs allowed Sawers to get in and beat Dunning. From this to the close the Celts put on a heavy pressure, and time had almost expired ere any further scoring took place, M'Callum safelyy putting the sphere out of the reach of Chalmers, the game thus ending.
